In general, the state of New Mexico has been getting quite a bit of rain for the last 6 weeks. Too much rain in some areas, especially over the burn scars of this summer's big fires, which have led to flash flooding. I should have known the jelly-feeding would grow. Soon after they showed up in the spring, the birds were emptying the jelly bowl (6 ounces) in about 22 hours. I had to refill it earlier each day, and sometimes I wasn't home (visiting Cindy). So I put up a second one, and then a third. I discovered that I have... ANTS!!! In the kitchen (okay, I need to clean counters better after I make a mess instead of before I make another mess), and my couch (which is where I eat, so I need to vacuum crumbs more often) -- but why my footstool, with no crumb problem?!? -- and in the bathroom (well, there is that back door in the room). Lazy day today. Slept late (which is what happens when you stay up till 3 A.M), made a batch of sloppy joes for lunch. After I eat, and the rest of it cools, I separate it into lunch-sized portions, wrap them, and put them in the freezer. Then TV and fanfic, and dusk was coming on, and I really needed to fill the water tubs and dump two more ( Read more... )

Sometimes I'm a little lax about making sure the birds have food. I've hung up a second jelly-feeder; they empty two -- that's about 12 ounces -- in approximately 24 hours. And I dump two sacs of milo seed -- 100 pounds -- at a time. It's been so dry that there's not a lot else for them to eat; that 100 pounds lasts about 3 days ( Read more... )

 
THIS:   I'm settling in to my new laptop... and I have just learned that I can scroll the screen up/down/sideways (webpage or Word doc) with two fingers on the touchpad. HOW DID I NOT KNOW THIS?!?!?
